Canberra Daily reports that Canberra’s first dedicated residential alcohol and drug rehabilitation facility for First Nations people will open next month as part of the new $49 million Watson Health Precinct, funded by the ACT Government. The precinct will also house new facilities for Ted Noffs Foundation (Noffs) and Marymead CatholicCare Canberra & Goulburn.
Noffs delivers youth alcohol and other drug rehabilitation services, and its new facility at the precinct will have 15 beds for young people aged 12 to 18, plus a further six beds for young people who cannot access mainstream accommodation because of their substance use history. The 24-bed First Nations facility will be run by Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health and Community Services, while Marymead CatholicCare’s STEPS program will provide residential care for young Canberrans experiencing mental health challenges.
