The NSW government has issued its official response to last year’s drug summit. Health Minister Ryan Park stated that 50 out of 56 recommendations will be accepted, while some significant proposals, including a legal defence for medicinal cannabis drivers, have been set aside for now.

The NSW Government rejected, for now, a recommendation to allow unimpaired medicinal cannabis users to legally drive, deferring a decision pending further bureaucratic advice. As Health Minister Ryan Park noted, authorities are “investigating a medical defence for people using medically prescribed cannabis who are driving”.

Ted Noffs Foundation’s clinical services director, Kieran Palmer, welcomed the government putting “science and evidence and health at the forefront of this conversation alongside law enforcement,” calling it “a commonsense approach” that “the majority of NSW families would feel the same”.
